Side from the Sea: the Coastline by Private Boat

From a private boat, Side looks different: the ancient harbour and the ancient city rise straight from the water, the shore alternates between sandy beaches and rocky stretches with clear water, and the Manavgat river reaches the sea next to the town. The captain chooses swim stops on the day by sea and weather. Private boats start from €550 for the whole boat.

The ancient city, seen from the water

Side is a resort town with an ancient harbour and an ancient city right by the sea. From land you walk among the ruins; from the water you see the old town in profile, set against the sky. Two of our boats were photographed off Side's ancient harbour with the old city behind them, and one is moored in Side harbour by the lighthouse.

It is one of the simplest pleasures of a private charter: no crowd at the rail, and time to look properly before the boat moves on.

Sandy beaches, rocky stretches and clear water

The coastline around Side mixes sandy beaches with rockier stretches where the water is clear. The rocky parts are good places to swim at anchor: the boat stops, the ladder goes down and you are in the sea. One of our boats, the motor boat with the sun deck, was photographed exactly like this, at anchor by Side's rocky coast.

We do not publish a list of named coves or fixed stops. The coast has many good places to swim, and the right one on any given day depends on the wind and the sea.

The Manavgat river mouth

Just next to Side, the Manavgat river meets the Mediterranean. It marks the meeting of two landscapes: green riverbanks and sandy shores on one side, the open sea on the other. Our two wooden boats are pictured on the river, and a day on them can combine river and sea, as agreed with the captain. Read more in our Manavgat river boat guide.

Who decides the route

On a private boat, you have more say than on any shared trip, but the sea still has the final word. The route and swim stops are agreed with the captain on the day. If it is calm, you may have a wide choice; if the wind picks up, the captain chooses sheltered water. That flexibility is part of the point: nothing is fixed in advance, so the day fits the conditions and your group.

  • Tell the captain what you enjoy: swimming, sunbathing, quiet, views of the ancient city
  • Ask about timing: when the light is good, or when the children will want lunch
  • Accept the captain's call on conditions; it is there for your comfort

Daytime or sunset for seeing the coast

The daytime package (10:00–15:00) is the one for swimming: five hours of clear water and sun, with lunch on board if you add the food option. The private day cruise is the natural way to see the coast and swim along it. The sunset package (from 15:00 until sunset) is the one for light, when the ancient city turns golden; our sunset yacht guide covers that evening.

Whichever you choose, the meeting point is confirmed with your quote: Side harbour or a pier on the Manavgat river, depending on the boat.

Choosing a boat for the coast

For swimming, look at the motor boat with its stern swim ladder. For views from a raised deck, a flybridge motor yacht. For a traditional day, the wooden sailing gulet. All are chartered whole, from €550 for the boat, with the final price quoted for your group. Our comparison of gulets, motor yachts and wooden boats helps you decide, and the daytime yacht guide shows how a swimming day usually runs.

Questions guests ask

Can you see the ancient city of Side from a boat?

Yes. The ancient city and the ancient harbour sit right on the water, and you see them in profile from the sea.

Where do private boats stop to swim near Side?

There is no fixed list. The captain chooses swim stops on the day, often at anchor off rocky stretches with clear water, depending on sea and weather.

Does a private boat trip from Side go to the Manavgat river?

It can, on the wooden boats pictured on the river. Ask us when you book, and the captain agrees the plan on the day.
